Tech Sheet:

PRODUCER: Eva Lopez was sourcing for the perfect place where Garnacha grapes grow in Spain. She wanted to elaborate the purest Garnacha and met Manuel Castro Gracia in Calatayud, a distinguished connoisseur of the garnacha grape variety. Both together decided to elaborate “Old Garnacha Vines – OGV” in Bodegas Virgen de la Sierra, based at Villarroya de la Sierra and founded in 1954. The oldest winery in DO Calatayud.
“Old Garnacha Vines – OGV” is a zero-residues wine made with the oldest vines at an impressive altitude. This mountain wine is unique respecting original terroir and fermented in traditional cement vats.

Calatayud area is the best area to grow garnacha. It is a difficult land not easy to cultivate because its high altitudes (2,600 to nearly 3,000 feet), extreme weather conditions and a multiplicity of soils—up to 20 different ¬terroirs—.
Garnacha, one of the most popular and widespread grapes in the world, was most probably born somewhere in Aragón (Calatayud area). Only 16 wineries currently operate in the appellation and Virgen de la sierra is the flagship.
